Wanaka to Mt. Cook [VIDEO] – New Zealand Adventure from Mark Brown on Vimeo.

The drive from Wanaka to Mt. Cook is also spectacular. What Kiwi’s refer to as a highway, the rest of the world refers to as a mountain pass. I got my first taste of what New Zealand’s “Highway’s” were like on this drive. In a sports car in the summer they would be a blast. In a campervan in the winter… not so much fun but pretty none-the-less.

Sorry about the audio… my mic obviously was bumped in travel and has a loose connection. I hope that it is still understandable. If not, just enjoy the beauty!

It has been a dream of mine to come to New Zealand for 5 years and I am finally here. The “plan” was to live in Wanaka, ski for the southern hemisphere’s winter, and work at the ski resort. I can “plan” all I want but that isn’t going to affect the weather patterns and this year New Zealand is having the worst winter they’ve had this decade (according to the locals). After spending 10 days in Wanaka doing my best to ski, train, and find a job with little luck, Ash and I decided we were wasting our time and money just sitting in a hotel so we rented a campervan to travel the country. This way we can see New Zealand and if the weather gets better I can go back to Wanaka and ski again.

The first stop on our campervan journey was Mt. Cook, New Zealand’s tallest mountain. To most of my North American and European readers you may be surprised to hear the tallest mountain in this entire country is not even 14,000ft. In fact, Telluride has lift access higher than Mt. Cook. It was strange to know that in the back of my mind because standing in the shadow of Mt. Cook is quite foreboding. It is magnificent up close and seems kilometers taller than anything around it.
